Known for his successful work on environmental science, air quality and climate change Dr. Azharı F. M. Ahmed was the host of Fun Science Workshop of the Özay Günsel Children’s University and gave a conference on “The Unknowns regarding Climate Change”.
According to the press release issued by the Özay Günsel Children’s University, the conference was held at Hall 4 of Near East University Grand Library where Dr. Azharı Ahmed made use of visuals to talk to the children about what climate change is, what global climate change is, reasons, how it came about and how it affects our world, greenhouse gases and their effect, historical global temperature rise; and he also screened a video titled as Greenhouse Effect. In the video demonstration it was expressed that the greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the earth’s surface, and that the greenhouse effect is one of the things that make the Earth a comfortable place to live. Furthermore, he provided details on improved greenhouse effect and atmospheric gases and answers to frequently asked such as “How does the greenhouse effect work? How are people affected by the greenhouse effect? What reduces the greenhouse effect on the world?

Human Activities Warm Up Our Planet by Increasing Greenhouse Gas Emissions…
He explained that the light coming from the sun travels through the atmosphere and is absorbed at the world surface and the greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, acted as blankets, trapping the temperature near the surface, and thus causing a rise in temperature. Therefore, he said that human activities increased the amount of greenhouse gases and caused more warming in our planet.

Dr. Amed expressed that greenhouse gasses stayed in our atmosphere for a long time and said that although plants and oceans absorb carbon dioxide, they are not enough to absorb extra carbon dioxide emitted by humans activities; therefore, he noted that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is gradually increasing. He pointed out that mankind did not produce much greenhouse gas until 150 years ago. He emphasized that forests have begun to be destroyed in order to open roads to cities, farms, industrial innovations, electricity and car use that have changed our way of life.

Dr. Amed pointed out that the United States is responsible for the use of electricity and transportation at the rate of 60% in the discharge of carbon dioxide emissions today. Also he expressed that the rest is composed of agriculture, industries such as factories that produce the products we use, and the energy we use in our homes and businesses.

He provided information on measures to be taken…
During the conference, Dr. Azharı F. M. Ahmed talked about how to take precautions against climate change and global warming. He said that small changes, such as switching to energy-saving light bulbs, walking instead of driving, turning off electrical items when not in use, recycling and reducing food waste, and using renewable energy types such as wind and solar energy, could lead to major changes.

A Plaque was Presented…
The conference continued with a fun Q & A section where children were provided to ask their curious questions. Finally, at the end of the conference, a thank you plaque was presented to Dr. Azharı M. Ahmed by Rector of Özay Günsel Children’s University Prof. Dr. Filiz Meriçli.

He has research which won a Nobel Prize…

Currently, Dr. Azharı F. M. Ahmed is a Nobel Prize winner and is Executive Director and Founding Partner of EKOQatar Consultancy and he has won the Nobel Prize in 2007 for his contribution to the work on climate change by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

University Authorities and Academicians were also at the conference…
It was pointed out that Rector of Özay Günsel Children’s University Prof. Dr. Filiz Meriçli, Vice Rectors of Near East University Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, Assoc Prof Dr Murat Tüzünkan and Assoc Prof Dr. Mustafa Kurt, Managing Board Members of the Özay Günsel Children’s University, General Secretary Duygu Kaptanoğlu, academicians and researchers also attended Dr. Azharı M. Ahmed’s conference titled as “The Unknowns regarding Climate Change”.Human Activities Warm Up Our Planet by Increasing Greenhouse Gas Emissions…
